When are drivers going to learn to look out for cyclists? Another of our top riders gets taken out, luckily this time, not killed...

Newton's worlds hopes get 'doored'

By Gerry McManus

British track rider Chris Newton's chance to ride in the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Manchester this month dissappeared today after the 34 year-old crashed while he was out training near his home in Oldham, Manchester. Newton was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken collarbone.

Newton was expected to ride in the men's point's race and the men's team pursuit in the World Championships in Manchester 26th to 30th March. Newton's team manager John Herety confirmed the crash. "Appparently a driver opened his car door on Chris when he was out training this morning," said Herety. "Fortunately Chris has already qualified for points race at the Olympics through his World Cup results but it he will very dissappointed about not riding in the World Championships."

One can but hope that the police take it seriously. Highway Code rule 239 includes:-

"you MUST ensure you do not hit anyone when you open your door. Check for cyclists or other traffic"

It's not advisory...

Without knowing the full scenario it could be many reasons, cars overtaking, car coming the other way to far over, etc. etc. It could happen to any of us in a moment of reduced concentration. The only good point is that he's not too badly injured!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's really bad news for him. Wonder how much the courts think would be enough to compensate a man for denying him the position as World Champion?

Fortunately Brailsford has said his Olympic chances should not be affected.

About 50p... if they even bother letting a collision involving a mere cyclist get to court.

That's bloody sad news. I hope he makes a full and fast recovery.

Being there does not in any way absolve the driver of responsibility. It is the driver's job to NOT door people. It's just survival smarts for cyclists to avoid the door zone wherepracticable because of the number of substandard drivers out there.
