Having said that I'm a non-smoker, so even a wisp of permeating smoke and I would be up in arms. Are you a smoker Andy?

I'm a non-smoker and I detest it in that being near smokers ruins an evening out for me. That said, while I approve of recent legislation protecting non-smokers I think we've been too hard on those bent on suicide by tobacco e.g. I think firms should provide smoking rooms for them rather than chucking them out on the street for a fag.

Why? It's all good. I've gone from 15 a day to around 4 sneaky little rollies on a night (outside, even if it's p*ssing down like now). I think it's a good thing.

I'm all up for non-smokers rights.

However, I do think the alcohol and drug fuelled folks are a lot more bother. Me and the OH haven't ventured up the city in years. That is a shame IMO, as I love Wolvo but the piss and drug heads have taken over.

I just wonder how, if we make it impossible for the population to smoke and they all simultaneously give up, how will we fill the £billions tax deficit?

And yes I am aware of the cost to the NHS of smoking related illnesses, but this amounts to £millions, not £billions.

And I'm a non smoker, so I'm not trying to justify a habit.

Also, if I lived next door to Rabbit and I was on my healthy eating lots of veg, grains and pulses kick - specifically lentil curry -you'd wanna evacuate that bedroom longterm. Or come round my house and complain about my eating habits and digestive issues. Probably easier to address the structural issues.

How about not SAYING anything, but just fuming your skirting boards with something really strong, - pine cleaner, menthol, wintergreen whatever...but really strong, as smokers have blunted sense of taste/smell.

Then wait and see if your neighbour comments on it. Then you can say, "Well, I don't smoke, but my bedroom smells of smoke coming through from your side, and I didn't know how to tell you without offending you, so I just tried to mask the smell."

At least you'll have clear sinuses when you wake up!

We live in a 1960s ex council house and mid terrace, the only brick walls in the house are on each side, the women next door smokes like a chimly and in the past 2 weeks the smell in our bedroom is of smoke and rather disgusting.

is there a law preventing her from doing this or do I just have to go and upset her, I don't really get on with many other neighbors so one more will not bother me too much!

any advice appreciated.

Rabbit

you have my complete sympathy wabbit.

I have the same problem with one of my neighbours.

I would suggest you contact your Housing Officer in the first instance . Ask for a visit and show her the problem. Don't mention it to your neighbour and I suggest you request your HO doesn't either. It will create bad feeling and solve nothing She is not going to stop smoking!

Once your HO is aware of the problem she should either contact the repairs or maintenance dept or support your call . Although not strictly speaking a repair there are various things reppairs can do to help with the situation.

You need to check under the floors and in the loft near the deviding wall to make sure there are no holes or gaps in the deviding wall brickwork or blockwork.

Next you need to look at your windows. Check the frame to ensure the sealant is still intact all round. Then check the rubber seals on all the opening sashes (I assume that you have Upvc ?)

Its highly likely that the smell is coming through your window around the opening sashes where there are always slight gaps.
Easy to test simply cover your window in plastic sheet and tape to the frame if the smell stops you have found the ingress point

Hope that is helpful

I I spent 35 years as a non smoker and it never bothered me that much when other people smoked near me. Not even enough to try and stop people lighting up at the same table in a pub, and certainly not enough to stop someone lighting up in the house next door.

thats ok then is it ? because something doesn't bother you , you don't see why it should bother anyone else.
thats a rather a selfish attitude typical of most smokers I find

What a selfish attitude . Unfortunately typical of most smokers I find

You're reading rather a lot into my post there, I'm struggling to see where I said that. Why not quote the post I made after this one as well? Or why not acknowledge that someone smoking in their own house is not usually a cause for other people's concern?

Your post seemed to inply that because the smell of smoke was not an issue to you it shouldn't be to anyone else ? was I wrong in my interpretation ?

I do acknowledge that everyone should be entitled to smoke in their own homes That isn't an issue is it ?
The issue here is one of unfortunate proximity .

I would guess that the seals of the windows in the op's property are probably leaking and that is where the cigarette smoke is entering.

Cigarette smoke is extremely offensive and upsetting to a small minority of non smokers . Because it is a small minority it doesn't lessen the distress suffered by these people.
No-one is blaming smokers , they rarely do . Its my experience that smokers tend to be resentful and defensive when they have no need to be.

What we are concerned with here is not preventing someone from smoking but rather finding a satisfactory solution to the problem of smoke entering the OP's bedroom.

Indeed you were, and you did rather come at it with your chin out, as it were. All I was doing was adding my tuppence worth; I'm not denying that other folk find smoke unpleasant, nor saying that they shouldn't. Merely that I don't, particularly, even now I'm not smoking.

I can understand - I used to stay regularly in a hotel where the tall narrow window frames went from the ground right to the roof. The floors didn't meet the frames so you could hear and smell the occupants of the rooms above and below. Horrible when someone smoked.
