Seriously? I think an intermediate sprint is one that occurs during the stage, not at the finish, where fewer points are available

Er, it's not a distance but a line across the road part way along the route. First to that line wins the points. If you're asking when roughly the contest begins, it will depend on a number of factors like breakaways, position in the points comp etc.

If you believe Cavendish, then a good sprinter seems to be able to cover around 200m at full pelt in distance.

This year is the first year I've watched it properly after seeing a few of the stages of the giro (v. exciting). When I watched it previously it had time bonuses, how did they work?

Seconds were awarded for the first 6(?) finishers up to 12 secs for the winner IIRC
