It looks like last year's holiday was the last family holiday. My wife was discussing next year's holiday plans over the Boxing Day fry up and extracted a promise from older son that he didn't want to go on holiday with the family:
"You don't want to come with us next year do you?''
With an intonation that indicated that the right answer was a negative one, she asked younger son; "Do you want to go on holiday with us next year"
With an ensuing silence that indicated that 'us' meant mother and daughter I realised that I too had be excised from next year's plans.
My younger son was devastated. 'How could you not take dad?' he appealed. 'It means he'll be left behind and I wont have a free house to have parties in'
I smirked inwardly.
My secret perusals of the European Bike Express web site over the past month or so had indicated that a three week tour immediately after schools break up for the summer was a possibility but the family holiday got in the way and a quirk of the EBE timetabling meant that similar slots were not available in the summer break if we had the family holiday in the first half of the summer break.
'Would you mind if I looked at spending three weeks in France if I'm not included in your plans' I asked in tones that indicated that I was putting on a brave face despite being excluded from the holiday plans.
After many apologies from wife for assuming that I'd not be interested in going somewhere hot, I was given carte blanche whoooo!!!! Result!!!!!
That's 24th July - 15 August taken care of. Brittany, Pyrenees and the Med here I come
Then there's Solfest for August Bank Holiday
Now to shed some lard ready for the Pyrenees......
