Anyone got one? I have a very cheap android tablet that just about works but lags a lot. The cheap tablet has shown I have a use for one so I'm thinking of a nexus 7 and would like to hear anyone's experiences

Cheers. No, there's no sim here in the UK either but I'm surrounded by wifi. I don't want an ipad, just smoothness.

If I charge it overnight do you think it'll get me through a day?

I got one the day they came out and love it. We've an iPad3 as well and I prefer the Nexus - we've a desktop pc, two laptops and the iPad but I was using the Nexus to browse CC when I saw this thread anyway.

It's around half the size and weight of the iPad, easier to carry, easier to read, better functionality, easier to type etc, The iPad might win if I'm at home for the day but, as a travelling tool, the Nexus wins out totally, even in a straight contest without considering the 3x price difference. The iPad hasn't been out of the house since we bought it, the Nexus comes with me everywhere.

Oh, and I think the lack of sim is a bonus. My phone, and many other smart phones, can be used to create a wireless access point and I can position that where the signal is strongest and connect to the world through it. There's no need for another device on contract, another number and another monthly charge and I can set up the phone then piggy back off that with Nexus, iPad, laptop and whatever else I want, rather than having to sort out access for every device. If I want wireless access, BT connect points are pretty prevalent, I can see three from where I'm sitting now, and many cafés have free wireless access but, tbh, I just use the phone's hardware as I like to control access rather than using other people's network points with other people's ideas of security. So, I definitely see the lack of SIM as a bonus.

But, back to the Nexus, love it, would replace in a flash and, given my phone contract is up soon, buying the Nexus and sticking with the current phone will actually work it cheaper than switching some something like the Samsung SIII which is smaller and less convenient than the Nexus but, at the same time, larger and less convenient than just taking the current phone, if space is an issue.

Downsides... none for me. Some don't like that it has a single low-quality camera, compared to the two cameras on the iPad, but I use a DSLR for images. Also, the battery life in the iPad seems to be better, but the difference is pretty marginal and I have some fairly juicy apps running 24/7 on this. In terms of the battery life, it's telling me that it has been unplugged for 44 hours and I still have 25% battery remaining.

I think there are too many variables to make an accurate comparison of battery times in use, rather than in the lab. It could be down to the brightness settings, it could be the apps (BT Wi-Fi finder, Faecebook, ebuddy, active wallpaper, a couple of live widgets etc), it could be entirely my imagination, but it feels like I get about 10-11 hours continuous on this and an hour longer on the iPad,

Well I'm convinced. The camera was never an issue. Tend to use my phone for taking pics which uploads to various places in the cloud.

If I can read my email on the Nexus and just leave it kicking around doing its stuff and get 11 hours I'll be happy.

The email handling seems to be better on the Nexus than the iPad. I still haven't got that reliably sending mail through yahoo but it worked first time and every time with the Nexus. I prefer the way that the Android mail handler looks and operates, it just feels more intuitive to me.

As for the battery, I should maybe clarify that I meant 11 hours continuous use. Kicking around, it'll live for 4 or 5 days.

I thought that's what you meant. It will take me at least a couple of days to build up 11 hours of continuous use.

I still love my Kindle and this won't be replacing that bit of kit. I'll use the Nexus for email, web and the odd bit of gaming. It's basically to stop me having to get up from the sofa.

I pitched for an ipad as a replacement for the desktop PC at home, I had the original ipad and loved it so had no problems buying another. That being said if the Nexus had of been out by the time I was reaching my hand into my pocket the price tag would have been very tempting indeed.

Oh, I also have a Kindle (well am on my second one having bust the first) and love it dearly, it's a different device for a different task.

That's the reason we bought the Kindle, but the build quality is shocking, and the screens very very fragile. I'm gonna use ours as a frisbee !
