Back in the Middle Ages, surgeons were not considered doctors as they had no formal medical training so could not belong to the Royal College of Physicians (people who performed surgery were 'barber surgeons') , therefore they had to be called Mr.

My other half has titanium plates and screws at two points in his jaw. He's never had any problems with it.

He is not a woman so he wouldn't!!

The bit about "fitting" is the bit I don't like the sound of. Tough call to make, can they use superglue?

I have Titanium in my left leg after a piggy back accident, most other people break their legs doing more interesting things.

My mum has had two operations for mouth cancer and has had her jaw broken twice, each time they have fixed the brakes with titanium plates.

Thanks for everyone's comments. Glad I have plenty of time to make my mind up on this one and no particular medical urgency.

My only thought is that at the age of 50, I might have several decades life left to put up with how my head is now (my Dad is coming up to his 93rd birthday) and how bad would it feel in say, 20 years time? If I opt for the new headset, better to do it soon, while I'm still in reasonable health.

One particular down side is that I wouldn't have young ladies in the street staring at me any more - even if I do feel like a fairground attraction at times!

Just caught a program on Sky3 called Brain Doctors, made in 2005 at the Neurosurgery unit at Frenchay Hospital where I was treated after my accident.

Not seen Dr David Porter, the consultant responsible for putting me back together and who suggested my titanium skull repair, perhaps he's on next week. Got an appointment with him on the 4th of March to discuss his suggestion in more detail so I should have made a decision soon.

I think it's become a status thing now, as well. Like you're so good a Dr, you go beyond being Dr and back to Mr again.

Apparently the colleges of vets are often discussing if they should be Dr or Mr - since they are veterinary surgeons...

Just saw Mr Porter today.

We went through the risks again - low risks percentage wise but high risks effects wise. The operation wouldn't help with the discomfort with my head and the headaches, in fact I might feel worse. He stresses that it would be cosmetic surgery and that I should only go through with it if I'm unhappy with how I look after the injury.

I think I'll kick it into touch for the time being although the offer of surgery remains open.

That's it for now then...I'll have to be content with my unusual good looks as they are!

I've got a titanium humerus and elbow (a bit of a whopping prosthesis) and I do have to be careful about infection - I have to take antibiotic cover for dental work and if I get a cut of any sort of depth in my skin, which is quite faffy. Apparently this is because of having the titanium as it's a 'foreign body', albeit a fairly benign one.

But it is cool having titanium...
