Talking to a guy today who comes from Dumbarton (near Loch Lomond for all you not Scots) and he was telling me there was a group of teenage boys last week one of which lives next door to him, who hired a van and wentl round all the grit bins in the town and surrounding ares and emptied them every time they were filled up.

they then went round all the houses asking people it they wanted their drives and pathways cleared for a tenner :laugh:

You've got to take your hat off to them for their enterprise

I expect that anyone having an accident due to slippery roads will be very appreciative of the ingenuity of these entrepreneurs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's actually against the law to take salt from a grit box for private use. It's classed as theft. I hope no one took them up on their offer.

I find it quite remarkable that anyone would take their hat off to someone who steals grit at this time of year, especially as they were doing it for a profit rather than even using it themselves.

I think stamping on their fingers would be a far more reasonable reaction.

As someone who dug out 300 yards of road (with my 9 year old son - couldn't stop him) and a couple of neighbours.....

The rest of the 200 folk were lazy funkers.................

Someone coming round selling it would have had my two 'home made ice/snow shovels' up their rears........;):biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

How much does a piece of 50mm by 75mm by 5mm thick of MDF on the end of an old brush handle cost.......obviously a mega buck............. worked a treat.......

Someone in Derbyshire got reported to the police this snap, for doing what I saw in Feb, and they took it seriously. I'd like to think it was the same bloke - similar description 2 miles away.

It's obviously a dishonest thing to do, but it does show a good level of enteprise. Better than them breaking into peoples houses...

Perhaps they were only selling grit to houses they felt they might fancy burgularing so they could make a clean getaway ;). It can't be that easy for burgulars in all this snow and ice ..................

But it shows True Grit in difficult trading conditions.

I used to live in a cul-de-sac on a steep hill. The gritters couldn't do it as it was too steep and no where to turn round. The council installed a salt bin half way up and said we could use it as necessary.
