A thread for nicknames and their origins.

My starter is a lad I knew in London called Lino.

I made the obvious inquiry and it emerged he was known for regularly getting into fights and losing.

Hence he ended up on the lino.

A shady character I knew from the same time had a driver/minder called Gorilla - for obvious reasons.

His real name was Chris, which as I was keen to keep my kneecaps intact, I felt more comfortable using.

A man I still know who is now in his 50s and always gets Bobby Jumper - I don't know his real second name.

That one dates from his childhood when he turned up at school one day with a patterned jumper.

For some reason his mates made a lot of that and the name has stuck ever since.

Any more?

At secondary school I was "Mole" on account of my tendency to be low profile and a bit shifty. Characteristics I still retain.

I have had various, usually rather derogatory (), nicknames but one that stuck the longest was

'Tripper'

When I was in the BBs', because I was always rubbish on the horse and other gymnastic things, and would often be seen heading through the air at the wrong angle/doing the wrong thing/going the wrong way/falling over/off something, with the predictable crash landing! :giggle:

When I was in the Army , I was given the tag of " LJ " , because I was the tallest in the Troop ,
shortened from Little John, though my name is Steve ,
That is still with me today on the Regt'l websites.
One new Troop Leader
2nd Lt, Bowes Lyon , got a bit confused, he started calling me by this as he thought it was in fact my surname,
Untill the Troop Sgt
' Dutch Holland ' put him right. !

I was out on my bike the other month when I spotted a bloke I hadn't seen from school days. It's banana head, I said to myself. He was cruelly called this because his head was curved due to a deformity.

One of our cycling club members has picked up the name fake bake, due to his constant all year round sun tan. He insists he maintains it through cycling, saying that even sunny winter days tan him. Funny, i've seen him with his shirt off, he's tanned all over. So I presume he rides around in winter without wearing a Jersey!
