Mrs C is away for a company shindig in September, which leaves me with a weekend alone. One of my goals for this year had been to increase the distance I've cycled and the variety of terrain in which I've done it.

To that end I've been looking at taking my bike abroad and doing a long weekend run taking advantage of a potentially free weekend.

The main constraints are that start and end points must be easily accessible from Liverpool or Manchester, and travel cost must not be too high. I've got friends who live in Barcelona which makes it an obvious destination, and I was thinking of starting in France and heading south.

The two choices are either along the coast, or cutting inland to Limoux and over the Pyrenees and down. The latter being my preferred route, with a total distance of around 600km.

At this stage I've not booked anything or made firm plans I'm just looking for thoughts at this stage, my plan would be to do this over 5 or 6 days, hopefully faster, with a day or two in Barcelona.

Any thoughts or planning tips?

What about Bilbao - Barcelona, you'll have then done a coast to coast. :okay: The distance might be similar (?) and cheap rooms are readily available.

It's more to do with availability of flights to a reasonable start point, Bilbao is an option, but I quite like the idea of going along the coast for a stretch and heading inland a bit later, it was just my initial thoughts, not made any decisions on route yet.

As it happens I have done most of that route. www.jmhr.com has links to them. Nimes to Spain most of the coast is flat and uninspiring so do keep inland. see here https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=1M2&doc_id=4924&v=84 for the route I took for that bit. For the coast road across the border I took this route https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=1M2&doc_id=1447&v=2M

I have also done bits on the Canal du Midi (on the first link above and here https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=1M2&doc_id=17453&v=DE) and keep well clear anywhere east of Castelnaudary.

Bon voyage

weather should be fine but be prepared for possible storms, partic around the equinox (that's what my French colleagues used to say at least)
