Well, I don't think it's very clever, and I'd probably stick him on Silly Cyclists, but other than that I don't think he's much danger to others. I'd be a lot more condemnatory if he were in a car, because of the massive increase in risk to others that represents.

Ah, OK. Well he's certainly putting himself at risk. I thought you were saying that he wasn't really doing anything wrong and it was nothing to worry about.

Maybe he was using the light from his mobile

Have you passed this guy before?Maybe hes returned to work since the clocks have changed and got caught out but that doesnt excuse the use of the phone though, hang em all i say

Quel knob.

I would still be sad if I didn't see him and ran him over though, and his family & loved ones might be upset as well.

Well, he's a danger to other cyclists.

If you are wanting to overtake him it is very difficult for a car behind to anticipate you are going to pass something that may not be in their vision.

Just another of life's tools.

Annoyance, sure, and I don't mind Ben's video at all - I enjoyed watching it.

No need for problems from the car driver behind - they can anticipate my signalling and subsequent manoeuvring just fine. ;)

Ben, I don't have much experience yet with this cycling malarkey .... BUT! I thought the vid was great and bloody frightening. Maybe something to do with living in a village in Zomerset, not much ever happens. Hence why I think it was just plain stupid ... not you filming I hasten to add, I mean him, the minja ... oh you know hat I mean

Oh, I must say ... Mrs Crinkly-Crumpet who lives down the Rd still cycles. And when it is dark, with no lights; then again she is registered blind and seems to work on the basis if she can't see much then what is the point of lights! Dreadful logic I know; Oh, I changed her name BTW.

You obviously have not been commuting for very long.

But he had reflectives, and as such could be seen quite clearly.

Not against the law and envy is one of the seven deadly sins.

Really? Seems sound to me, Why would he need to check and give a signal? He is riding alongside a car that is turning right along with him in a right turn lane, the only way he is going to get hit is if a car behind turning right as well goes into the car in front/hits the cyclist.

Confucius say, those in glass houses should not throw stones.

Colour co-ordinated, because I can.

I see you're talking crap as usual.
It's illegal to cycle between dusk and dawn without lights.

I done the whole colour co-ordination ting for a reason - I was refering to using a mobile phone. You should really read what I've posted...including the Confucius bit.

It wasn't obvious what the colour co-ordination was referring to. I can hardly be blamed if what you wrote was unintelligible.

I think it's interesting that you don't see any problem with the cyclist's behaviour.

Personally, I think he's a dick.

If you're out after dark, get some lights.

We know the reasons why its illegal to text and drive. Your concentration/control's worse than being drunk. Can't see it'd be any different if you're riding. If you're on the road you should be on the road mentally too.

Which is why you should maintain a safe gap to the vehicle in front. So shoot like the above don't happen and is an occurence regardless of cyclists having lights or not.

I don't understand your point.

I didn't say that I didn't, but that's not to say if I do or don't. The fact is that my cycling knowledge and experience goes way beyond what you know, what you can judge. Which is what you have done with the cyclist in question with limited knowledge. This has been pointed out to you by other members in that they do not agree with your assessment.

That's all I'm going to say.
[/quote]

Bizarre. I don't need years of experience to know that cycling without lights, one-handed, on the phone, with poor observation and awareness is a bad idea.

I don't worry when I see riders dressed all in black with no lights. They will be involved in far, far more near misses with cars, and the drivers will get a shock when/if they see them at the last second, thus making them more aware, and therefore even more likely to see 'well illuminated' sensible riders like myself.

I think the unlit men in black should be applauded for making the roads safer for the rest of us. I doff my cap to the Ninjas , you brave (arse) souls!

. No lights, cycling one handed whilst on the phone.

Feeble effort.

I was overtaking an unlit multi-tasker late on a dark evening when she swerved without warning. I could smell her cigarette smoke as I followed her but was quite surprised as I overtook her to hear and see her speaking on her mobile phone.

Point of protocol: Ninjas wear black. That guy was a dangerous, unlit cyclist but he is most emphatically not a ninja.

I love it when they are unlit, in black, wearing a hoodie that complete obliterates side vision and they are on the phone.

Edit: what camera are you using? That's nice quality night time footage.

Darwinism will take care of him before too long. I'm more concerned about the bad reputation he is getting cyclists in the meantime.

I drive as well and I have (some) sympathy for the driver who had just come out a nice brightly lit office and wipes him out as he wanders all over the road with no lights while chatting on his mobile. He might not be much of a danger to anybody but himself but he could still really spoil somebody's day.
