I'm waiting for "but you saw 'em, right?!"

He might have seen em but the person who ends up running them over probably won't (or they'll use that as the excuse later on).

It's a wonder that so many people don't think their life is even worth £20 for a decent set of lights.

I see an ever increasing number of them on the road lately and surprisingly they seem to be middle aged women, also the last 3 or 4 rljers were the same ninja women.....

I even saw one guy with a red on the front, and a white on the back!! :gun:

I was going down a one lane country road this week, when I saw the faintest of white light up ahead, I assumed it was a very poorly lit cyclist coming towards me, as I got closer I couldn't work out why I wasn't catching him quicker (I had slowed to a crawl to make sure he was safe), I then realised he was cycling the same way as me and had a white light on his bag with no red light on the back, as I got past him I saw he didn't have any lights on the front at all, it was pitch black, I have no idea how he felt he was cycling safely, he mustn't have been able to see hardly anything!

I left docklands at 12.30 this morning, heavy rain and squally winds.... My route was along commercial road - aldgate - and up to Old Street roundabout - old street and finally up Grays Inn road. I saw around 20 cyclists.... Gobsmacked to see 15 of them riding with the traffic in bad visibility and no lights!!!!
I can't believe how stupid these people are!!!!

Does education work or is it better to ticket the idiots to the point of persecution and publicise the results in the press.
I've put plenty of effort into handing out tickets and tearing them up when a set of bike lights have been produced. Hasn't dented the number of ninjas in my town at all!

You'd imagine issuing an on-the-spot fine would work... Does it not?

I heard, but didn't witness, that the police were pulling over cyclists in Cambridge issuing them with an on the spot fine, but, also fitting lights to their bike that I believe were to the value of the fine. I think it was only £10 or something, so not great lights, but better than nothing and a great idea by the plod.

As a driver I do find it alarming sometimes to catch sight of an unlit cyclist in the periphery of my field of vision.

Even with efficient wipers and largely clear windows, this can be more of an issue in the rain, as droplets on the unwiped parts of the screen conspire to hide the hard-to-see.

Nonetheless, I am nervous at the prospect of Draconian measures against unlit cyclists.

Few seem to be killed or injured and one rarely hears of them causing (or believed to be the cause of) accidents.

They are a pain and a niusance, but so are many other road users.

I quite enjoy having somebody to have a middle-age tut of disapproval at.

And... I remember well that in the days of those old metal lamps with the big, single block light in them... my battery was often flat and unreplaced.

I don't think it's always about the injury stats though. For one thing, I doubt the majority of accidents that aren't KSI's are reported so it'd be hard to say how many people are hurt because they don't have lights.

Another thing is that as a cyclist and a pedestrian, it's one more thing amongst the many, to keep an eye out for. When I'm cycling along, or crossing a road and I see a dark shadow ahead, it's often very difficult to assess how far away they are and it's an extra distraction that could be so easily avoided.

one of my students got knocked off his bike last week. I was full of sympathy until I found out that he had no lights, it was pitch black and lashing it down. I told him to go to sports direct and buy a set of lights for £4.99 and not be so stupid.

Round here the ninjas seem to be mainly the students.

I wouldn't mind so much if they were skint, but only the rich kids can afford uni nowadays (joke, not intended to open up a politics debate here). No doubt "lights are for plebs"

Not so much seeing them but it's how late you see them.I generally see ninja's eventually because they are going the same way and their reflective pedals give it away a bit.For the same reason the other day I saw a cyclist when I must have been ten yards off of him im ashamed to say.I was coming out of a turning into the high road.I can understand why motorists make the same mistake.(I expect to be flamed for that comment). He sort of blended in with everything else.

Sometimes motorcycles are the same problem.Their headlight blends in with the street lights, car lights or whatever, plus some cars can be mistaken for motorcyclyes when they have one headlight out.Why do some cyclists ride with either a red on the front or white on the back?
I have even seen blue on the back. All down the magical CS2 every lighting combination going,or not.

this seems to be a recent thing

I've seen a white rear light, which was disconcerting, a blue rear light that made no sense to me and what looked like an expensive rear light that did a pattern of red and blue, again wtf is that supposed to represent
