Santos bike's are worth a look http://www.santosbikes.com/index.php/en/bikes/travelmaster, or keeping things English there's Argos Frames, over in Bristol. It'll be interesting to hear what you choose.

Santos are a strange company. I contacted them last year regarding a belt drive expedition bike along the lines of one ridden by Mark Beaumont but with disc brakes. They replied they don't or won't do disc brakes, only rim brakes either cable or hydraulic on their bikes. I pointed out I didn't want to have to get a new rim and wheel build when the rims wear out. They told me their rims are very hard wearing and this would be unlikely. I wasn't convinced, but they still couldn't or wouldn't supply a bike with disc brakes. Their loss.

Erm, I thought they'd have done them as an option as many people, like yourself prefer disc's, I use rim brakes & got 17,000 miles out of the last ones & still ran true, although had fresh rims put on for the next big tour. (Italian DRC MT19's). Maybe Argos cycles then, nothing was a problem for Gary at Argos, whatever I asked for he obliged with, such as the top-tube internal cabling (rear brake, which was ran through a '5mm steel tube to keep the top-tube sealed), I even supplied him with Rohloff compatible 6mm stainless custom drop-outs. Well worth a look.

Not directly related to touring, but still bike related and along similar lines....

I emailed a large bike shop in Boston twice in the last 3 days (on the assumption my first email was lost) about the availability of a bike in a particular size, with no response. While I do know that I could use the phone to call directly, why have a web presence with integrated email for queries if you aren't going to actually use it? And it's not like these winter months are the busy season for bike shops either..... is it that hard to hit the "reply" button?

Anyway, I'm moving on to another bike shop that deals in the bike brand I want, and I'll only go back to this place if I have to based on availability. I am contemplating finding the owner of the shop and emailing  about this -I wonder if they know this is happening (I know if I was the owner of a shop, I'd want to know!). Then again, I really don't feel like taking any (of my) time to inform an owner -I guess if they are interested, they should find out about it themselves or at least train their employees properly.

It just seems such a ridiculous way to lose a sale to me. Course, they could get back to me in the next couple of days, we'll see.
