..so why are my cranks turning when I push the bike walking on the pavement? Not happy, fear something has died or is dying in the rear hub.

sounds like the hub is dirty inside or a pawl spring is busted / weak. easy to strip and check. a good clean and lube might sort.

it could also be a bearing going / gone, again only a strip n tell will do.

Nothing has died in the rear hub. It's just the force required to push the internal hub body through the ratchet is not there becuase you are walking with the bike and there is no force on the pedals. Try running and see if it happens.

Already ran with it this morning up a small hill. Still does it.

I've done 4000 miles since the wheels were bought last summer. The other day I hit what I would describe as a trench as I entered the car park into work (and did me back in with it). Will see how I go with it, if it gets worse I'll take it into the LBS.

Its been slightly annoying as my pedal has clips and the leather has been rubbing off on the deck. It used to look nice.

4000 miles without a service to me sounds a lot, especially, as i assume with those miles, you've ridden it thru winter. it is not a difficult job, easy to learn and will save you money in the long run.

Mostly in dry weather tbh. I tend not to extend the commute during winter either.
