No, always a bugbear of mine, they are different

Linky if you get really bored ;)

of course certain Audi Quattros have a TorSen ( portmanteau word from Torque Sensing) centre locking diff taking it out of the definition of AWD.

all full time 4WD are AWD but not all AWD are full time 4WD, a bit like all elephants are grey but not all grey things are elephants.

Whenever I see AWD I always think of AWD Bedford.

This is AWD:

I spotted it yesterday, whilst out on my MTB style tourer, and took the pic at full zoom. It's bigger than it looks in my pic and could drive right over one of those toy 4x4s like a Range Rover. For really tough going they put a kind of massive steel track over the front 4 wheels. It's what you use to shift a forest on a steep rocky hillside.

Panter, which truck did you get nicked, I have a defender 300TDi I love it but it is very expensive to run and keep running, in the last six months alone, brake servo, clutch master cylinder, brake master cylinder, starter going, hand brake going and steering a bit wooly..................but I still love it.

I had a quattro turbo too, but it was a Swiss import ABT Performance built Audi 90 with a wr engine fitted. Absolutely wonderful car. Always dreamed of owning a proper wr though

Mine was a Toyota Hilux Surf, I had her nearly 5 Years and despite approaching 250000kms she never ever let me down.
I did want a LR but the reliability issues put me off I must admit

My first experience of an Audi Quattro was one doing an emergency stop in front of me. I realised very quickly the ABS stops the Audi an awful lot quicker then my mk1 Escort could at 60mph. I had to use the other lane on the A127 to stop in.
I was keeping a good 2 seconds behind in the dry but also only had little drum brakes on the Escort.

Sorry to hear about the car though - never nice to have something nicked and destroyed.

When I was a kid, we had two cars nicked and blown up! We lived in Belfast. The real problem was that when 'they' nicked the first one, it still had my Dad in it, and he was held captive for a day while 'they' used it to run guns in over the border. 'They' being the IRA.... It was then dumped and the Army blew it up as a suspicious vehicle.

The second one was merely joyriding kids, but once it was dumped the Army blew it up as a matter of course.

I remember him talking about when he went to see the remains, and it smelt of almonds.

I must admit I am looking forward to picking mine up, even on a tatty old runabout there is something very special about that quattro badge (a badge that is virtually unchanged since its conception I believe?)

Thanks Arch, it was surprisingly upsetting really, I was very fond of that car. Mind you, your story helps put things in perspective!

I looked at an old landcruiser the other day, full history but then I seen 200,000 miles on the clock and thought maybe not.

Arch I know where you're coming from there ......
