The fact that the UK's electoral machinery places in power a small group of substantially identical men having substantially similar backgrounds in terms of upbringing, education and professional expertise (or largely conspicuous lack thereof) suggests that it is incapable of identifying the best.

Swee'pea99's post (#24) is important since it points to how we better understand what "the best" might mean in the first place.

Perfectly succinct.

What's with the reverse snobbery? The class war-fare? So what where people were educated? It only matters how good a job they are doing. Reverse that anti-Eton sentiment and apply it to your local comprehensive: can you imagine anyone saying "5 of the cabinet committee are from (yah-booh-sucks) the local comprehensive. What sort of country are we living in"? Why would it make the slightest difference?
The manner in which people are educated is important, it appears to me that an Eton education boosts self confidence and leadership qualities in a manner which leaves the casual observer believing that the Eton educated must be more intelligent than the rest of us.
It's all very well to have leadership qualities, but where are they likely to lead us?

We don't all want out.
I would rather have old Etonians at the helm than a clown like Salmond.
I am a fiercely patriotic Scot, but until that moron can tell me what his plans are for the future of our struggling nation, then I will be voting for the status quo. He is strangely silent on a host of issues.

Surely what is most important is the best available people are in the relevant posts.

Their education background, gender, sexuality, race , religion, football team supported, marital status etc are irrelevant.

It could be a coincidence that all the best people just happen to be white, wealthy, male old-Etonians. On the other hand, perhaps they're not the best people...

So you're saying that women aren't up to the job.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

I have repeatedly said the most important thing is that the best available people for the roles are in place.

I have not made any reference to the gender race, religion, sexuality etc.

Please do not start making up things and attributing them to me.

At no time have I said or suggested that the best people are currently in place now. That is a completely different debate

Nor did I suggest that you had.
Nor did I suggest that you had suggested that I had!

The Costa Clyde rain magnet.
If we get another Tory government and independence is knocked back..
It'll be a return to the dark 1980s Thatcher era up here....
because she totally f'ed us Jocks
She f'ed the unions, wherever they were, not just Scotland. They needed f'ed because they were holding the country to ransom and were strangling British industry.
Thank them for the fact that no-one wanted to buy British ships, or cars, or coal, or anything else. Thank them for the fact that we have no industry and no jobs.

Salmond wants us to be another Norway, apparently. Ha ha, pull the other one. You are 40 years too late ya nobber. The oil in the North Sea will last another few years, then what? Let us know your plans, Salmond, and I might take you seriously.

Staying on the musical theme, if we do get independence, then in the words of Bachman Turner Overdrive; You aint seen nothing yet!
