I do, as a filter. By my tastes it over-rates noisy plot-free crap like Iron Man and under-rates most foreign language films, but if it gives a low-ish score to a mainstream release I have always found that it was indeed a waste of a fiver. And it is a well built website with a huge amount of information.
I agree. IMDB is far from perfect, but you get to learn and allow for most of its 'imperfections', and on the whole it's a fairly reliable starting point at the very least.

Surely it falls down in that on paper it is just a far fetched story that some seem to buy into.

On the screen is there really a boat in which they shove two lions and two zebras! Acted out it must become rather laughable.

A great film, too. It would be on my Best 50 list, although not in the top half - I would put Kieslowski's Three Colours trilogy above it, for instance, which came out the same year.

I miss Barry Norman.
He was always a good source, and I usually found his opinions reliable
Same here. But even Barry had the constraint that he couldn't say on primetime TV "this film is absolute pants. Do not waste your money" - because he had a living to earn as well. IMDb is in that sense entirely honest.

Rotten Tomatoes can be a useful site...

BTW I've just seen the Indian film "The Lunchbox" and it was utterly, utterly brilliant. Hilarious and heartrending.

I always though that he had a way of emphasis and tone that would convey the message that the film was worse than he was actually saying

Surely it must be a bit like that film about the plane crash in the Andes 'Alive'. Not great, but compelling none the less because it's a true story and has some good special effects. .
