I have a colleague who apparently has a Ladyship of somewhere or other that she bought off the internet. She has some land on the moon and other such silliness as well. She knows it's all just a bit of fun though and didn't pay two grand for it .

I "own" a square foot of Islay at the Laphraoig distillery but the ferry costs more than the "ground rent" is worth so it's not worth going over to collect .

Just change your first name by deed poll to Lord or Lady and for the princely sum of £13 all the benefits of a legitimate title will be yours.

A former colleague of mine was known as Dr ****** ******. Name redacted. All his mail arrived with Dr as his honorific title, his driving license had Dr on it too. He attended high powered educational conferences and obtained a post at a top boys private school in London where he taught very successfully and obtained outstanding examination results for his students. He could be arrogant and aloof and he got his come uppance when his head of department got fed up with being belittled and undermined tah he resorted to doing some digging into my ex-colleague's past. His claimed PhD was non-existent neither was one of his two claimed Masters degrees.

A quiet word in the head's office ensued and my ex-colleague departed forthwith with two references: One that was fully supportive of his excellence at teaching mathematics in a state school and the other, totally damming of his ability to teach in the private sector.

On the snobbery value, I wrong footed a pompous snooty deputy head teacher that I had the great misfortune of having to tolerate for six or seven years. He was an Oxford graduate and rejected the buying of the MA as was his right and pompously dismissed it as a frippery and bauble that no self respecting socialist should boast of having. I was doing a part time PhD at the time and he approached me:

Snooty deputy: "Vernon, when you get your PhD, will you be known as Mr. Vernon Levy, PhD or Dr. Vernon Levy?
Me: "Nether of those"
Snooty deputy: "What do you mean neither of those?"
Me: "I'm going to use the doctor title but I'm going to change my name too"
Snooty deputy: "Change your name? What to?"
Me: "Zhivago"
Snooty deputy: Exits coughing and spluttering

Sadly I never went on to complete the PhD - I was too dedicated to mischief and philandering and too unwilling to watch my supervisor present my research as his own for me to continue but my colleagues were up for paying for my change of name by deed poll had I got the PhD. I'd have done it too.
