It's already been covered in other posts that there's been an increase in cyclists on the roads since the good weather arrived, a few of which have the obligatory team jersey's and shiny bikes.

My question is do you acknowledge other cyclists?

I've spent my whole life riding motorbikes and everybody I come across gets a nod of the head and I subconsciously do this with cyclists (apart from the guy riding the £50 full-susser on the pavement as he never looks in my direction anyway!)

Does anyone else have people they see on their daily commute that they give any acknowledgement to or is it just me?

I acknowledge all other cyclists what I see .. a hang up from my old motorbiking days. Apart from there's a few that I see quite often on my commute that have never acknowledged me back so after two or three attempts I thought "screw you" and stopped bothering with them.

Everyone else gets a nod or a "hi" though .. even people out walking their dogs. There's a few regulars I see that I might stop and pass the time of day with if it's convenient.

I chat to the odd rider but I see hundreds of cyclists every trip

I think I should have said I live in a fairly small town (supposedly a city!) where cycling is definitely NOT the norm. Having cycled in London last year, I think you'd get a crick in your neck if you tried to nod at everyone on a bike!

If I encounter one other cyclist a week on my commute, it's an event.

I thought a pattern was emerging when a guy on a red bike shot past me twice in one week a while back (haven't seen him since).

I would have acknowledged him, if I could have caught him!

Insert excuses about panniers, headwinds, long distance covered by me before the encounter while he was fresh, him having superior machinery, etc here.

I always nod or say hello to other folk on leisure rides, and generally its reciprocated; occaisionally it leads to a conversation if we are going the same way. On my commute after 2 and half years of saying hello to the same folk every day with no response I've given up most days unless they make the 1st move. There's one bloke however who always responds and it brings a smile to my face.

In a place the size of Stirling, why not, in town here, I generally only bother with the regulars...

If I said hello to every cyclist I see on my commute i would get bleedin' jaw ache..

So just a nod is suffice.

Yes - I like to hail dog walkers too, as I like dogs and sometimes get the chance to have a chat with the pooches as a result.

To be fair, though, it's getting to the stage where I can exchange sort of telegraphic greetings with some of the people passing me in their cars. It is, after all, the same ones every day, and as I'm the only person who ever cycles that way, I guess they feel they sort of know me.

"It's that nutter on his bike again..."

I tend to nod at other cyclist and say hello to those I see most morning, this morning spoke to guy on his motorbike while waiting by traffic lights, asked if he wanted a race to the next set of lights had good laugh about it, of course I let him win only polite

Depends where on the commute. In either B'stoke or Winch then no. If out in the wilds between the two I'll usually raise a hand in greeting. Also say hello to horse-riders.

On a related note, I find it interesting how the pattern of who you see changes over time. Quite often I find that I'll see a particular cyclist for 3 or 4 days in a row and then never see them again. This happens every once in a while. I usually cycle at the same time every day, so it must be everyone else that varies what they do!

Maybe 3 or 4 days is the average time it takes people to give up cycling in Glasgow!

Probably takes them till they recognise you and realise there is a chance they will be on youtube so they change their route.

We seem to have developed quite a community on part of my commute. I generally see the same people and we have gone from the little nod to big waves and a shout of hello every morning:biggrin: as we go our opposite ways

Mind you there are now all this summer softies appearing on their bling roadbikes that have never seen salt, but most of them at least acknowledge me
