Apart from an elderly lady on a Dawes Kingpin who lives quite close to me (and cycles 1/2mile to the local shop twice a week), I'm probably the only adult cyclist in my area. If I see one, I wave but it is a rare event.

Speaking as a cycling, motorbiking, ex-Beetle driving, Motorhome driving person, I find it all very confusing.

When I'm in my car (currently an old, battered Fiesta, so there's no "owner waving" going on there), I often find myself accidently nodding to (motor)bikers. I'm guessing they don't notice, or just assume I've got a twitch. I've also found myself once or twice waving to Beetle drivers, mostly because I forget I haven't owned one for several years.

When I'm in the motorhome, I have to remember to wave to other motorhomes. A nod or a smile probably wouldn't be recognized.

When I'm on the motorbike, I nod at all other motorbikes, mostly because if I waved, I'd probably fall off.

When I'm on the pushbike, I'm almost always too out of breath to say anything. Although as I tend to just cycle around the countryside, I don't often see many other cyclists. The ones I do see usually wave at me as they overtake me (red in the face, puffing away... That's me, not them).

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to remember what clique I'm in, and when. I think I might just start waving to everyone all the time.

By the time I've got to school (1/2 mile) I have usually seen several cyclists but generally different ones commuting - I'm usually concentrating on telling the kids not to cross the road so don't acknowledge them. At school I will say hello/smile etc at the 6-10 different cyclists that I might see - at least 3 or 4 every day.

The rest I meet I might smile at and there is just one guy that I regularly see (my route varies alot) but we are on nodding/hello terms. My son when he heard me say hello to him wanted to know who he was... err just someone I often see. Don't do as I do - remember you aren't meant to talk to strangers child!!

I've spent years passing the same guys every morning. Very few meet my eye, so I've given up with most of them...though there are exceptions. I cycled to Eastbourne last week - couldn't believe it - everybody said hello! Very odd.

Usually, don't see many, the ones at work, well, a couple are ok but for the little twunt on the miniature road bike you have to stare into his face and say hello so get any reaction, looks sometimes like he might start blubbering, I dont think he has forgiven me for overtaking him on full afterburners the other day , took me all day to recover after catching, overtaking and them maintaining flat out pace.

Another one, putting bike in sheds, I did him a cheery good morning and the tosser just blanked me, well F********ck you !

Some of you are in cloud cuckoo land if you expect a cheery reply from every hello you give. It's nice to get an acknowledgment but it aint the Highway Code.

I rarely see another bike on my commute, it's my weekend pootles that I see the most riders. Depending on what bike I'm on usually dictates what response I get. Roadies only seem to acknowledge me on the tourer. My favourites are the old CTC looking fellas on old roadies / touring bikes they tend to shout hello and wave at me. I think that's great.

A couple of days ago I was surprised when a ninja roadie overtook me and said hello and commented on how brave I was to wear shorts. Compared to the one the week before that just gawped at me, it was a refreshing change.

This puts me in mind of an early morning salutation I had late last summer. 6.30-ish one beautiful September morning I rolled up to the traffic lights on my way to the station along side another commuter. We got chatting about the beautiful morning and how nice it was to cycle: him all in full cycle-sport-lycra and hi-vis and me on my Pashley in a skirt. We couldn't have been more different but cycling was our common ground.

So yeah if you're on a bike I smile at you. Please smile back :bicycle:

I see about 6 on my route, most nod, one shouts 'Orightmate' and the bloke who always wears wellies, jeans, a thick grey anorak and wooly hat even during mid summer never responds but always looks as if to say 'are you local'

Always nod or wave & (almost) always get a response. Today, I did my good deed, stopping in Whitley Bay to lend a pump to a MTB with a flat. I think we should all salute other bikers, runners and cagers who do the right thing, as this will increase the global sum of niceness around.

Always say 'good morning' on the way past and have a few words if we're stopped at lights. Most respond ok and there are a few regulars you kind of get to know.

Not so many cyclists about in the afternoon on the way home. Came up to a set of lights one afternoon with a 'real' cyclist waiting already (good gear, expensive bike, etc). Lights changed, nodded him to go ahead and he indicated that he was 'fed up giving you guys a tow', so I went ahead. He pulled alongside at the next lights and I'd obviously proved myself worthy and we got chatting. Turned out he was on his way to compete in a time trial, via the local LBS. He said he always checked out other cyclist's legs to see if they were shaved or not and that determined whether or not he would take them seriously - interesting insight into the thinking. I guess I was the exception that proved the rule.
