I saw this article today: Bus driver seen 'reading Kindle at the wheel'

Although the article is about something that happened in the states, it really annoys me that some people think it is acceptable to use nomadic distractions whilst driving. Apparently there were a number of complaints about this driver previous to the video and at a guess this driver would probably find himself unemployed after the bus company have finished their investigations.

Personally I would love to see the law changed so that if anybody is caught using nomadic distractions such as TV, e-books, mobile phones, etc.... whilst driving get a life time driving ban. That way they can use these distractions to their hearts content as a passenger.

It's not unusual to overtake trucks on the motorway where the driver is reading the paper or a book. But if we believe the Simpsons they're all using auto-drive anyway...

PORTLAND -- A TriMet bus driver accused of reading while driving said he had a device on the dashboard, but wasn't looking at it, according to his attorney.

Downfader linked to this article in another thread. Thought it was worth reposting here, as it's quite relevant. Basically it's a complete litany of stupidity.

Deputy Southampton coroner Graham Denson made the comments during an inquest into a crash on the A338 at Breamore that killed a mum-of-two, Linda Williams.

He recorded a verdict of unlawful death after her partner, Michael Stewart, who was driving the Vauxhall Astra, was convicted in June for causing death by dangerous driving.

Stewart had his legs crossed to relieve back problems when he ploughed into the back of a lorry stopped behind a car turning into a lay-by.

...

It emerged during the hearing the driver in front of the lorry, Jacqueline Parker, from Fordingbridge, had stopped her Landrover Freelander to pull in after her mobile phone rang.

The lorry driver driving behind, Alan Bromley, was on the phone shortly before ramming his brakes on to avoid crashing into the Freelander.

And Deborah Walker, driving behind the ill-fated Astra, was found to have sent a text shortly before the collision ahead of her, which she avoided just in time.

Ms Williams, 61, of Uphill, Weston- Super-Mare, a front seat passenger, was killed instantly.

A trial in June heard how Mr Stewart had not been able to untangle his legs in time to brake properly.

So we have a man unable to brake because his legs are crossed, smashing into the back of a lorry which had suddenly rammed its brakes on because the driver - on the phone - had failed to spot a car in front, which had stopped suddenly so its driver could answer... her phone.

And behind them, another driver on the phone, who narrowly missed the mayhem.

I've seen at least two drivers reading books at the wheel.

They don't need technology to be distracted and impatient, believe me.

Let's ban everything - radios, books, newspapers, lipstick, other passengers as they'll talk to drivers, mobile phones, sweet jars as the driver has to reach over.

Also, let's remove the driver's brain as he might be thinking about the argument he had with his wife before he left home in the morning.

In fact, let's ban cars and trucks full stop as they pollute the environment and are a danger to us cyclists. We'll then have the roads to ourselves.

Rolling a ciggie at the wheel is a fine art!

Not when the twat is pulling out in front of you, as happened to me a while back.

Speaking of twats, having sex at the wheel is a fine art to behold as well.

Depends if more than one person is involved.

Newspapers are ok, after all you have to keep up with current affairs when poodleing along.

It's that or make some sandwiches using the steering wheel as a makeshift chopping board. Anything to stop you going to sleep and crashing into the barrier after being out on the road for 14 hours.

you can get a nice board for that..
