Whilst in no way dismissing the above suggestions, on a diferent tack I nominate John Harrison for his sheer determination, single-mindedeness and engineering precision in developing from 1728 to 1759 the world's first practical marine chronometer, without which scientific discovery and trade links could never have been made and forged.
