I have just been watching the African Cup of Nations and noticed a high number of countries had red, gold/yellow, and green on their kits. So I had a google search to find out why and discovered these were "Pan African" colours:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-African_colours

But I can't find any explanation why other African nations do not have "Pan African" colours in their flags, etc. I can't see any obvious colonial explanation, but it might have some connection. Anyone know?

I remember someone posting a video of an African bloke making saucepans out of Landrover door panels. I hope this helps Noods.

Not much help, Noodley - but there's the north; kinda part of the Arabic-speaking area. Mauretania, countries of the Maghrib (lands of the setting sun). And Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Somalia - as much part of the Middle East as African. Their flags are (mostly? Don't know.) the green of Islam; the red, white and black of the flag of the Egyptian revolution; or even all four.

I was thinking the north africans countries might align more to Middle east view in relation to flags, so that might cover those ones as suggested by growingvegetables...but cannot work out the others

Maybe it just "is" and there is no answer.

I always assumed it was just a collection of colours liked by the countries in the region, in the same way that most of the european flags are made up of red, white, blue and yellow

Some may be attributable to Pan Slavic colours
