Hi , personally i would go for the carrera , i had one and it was a greatbike for the money and does the other bike have shops where you can try the bike for size and take it back if there is a problem?Otherwise they look very similar.

By the way n00b = someone who should know better , newb = newbie or someone who does not know .

What CK said, certainly between those two and definitely if you must buy new.

But, if it was my money and I had £200 I'd buy something 2nd hand without a shadow of a doubt.

That way you'll get a far superior bike than your budget will get you buying new.

You will certainly get a better spec bike second hand if you know what pitfalls to avoid , if your new to cycling then a new bike might be a safer option unless you know someone who can take a look over a potential purchase to check it out .You could end up spending half your budget again if you get a bike that needs new chain, gears, brakes, headsets, hubs etc .

Between the 2 the carrera as it has rack mount points , if your carrying a heavy back pack then its worth investing in rack and panniers .
I have never used discs and i do know that they have better stopping power but i used the v brakes on my subway and when set up right they were fine.

For what it's worth it's a +1 from me for the Carrera. I am not familiar with the Halcyon brand so don't know what their quality is like but the specs are much of a muchness. The Carrera does have small points in its favour though, such as the rack mounts already mentioned.

I'm afraid I have never heard of the Bengal brand of disc brake so I'd be wary of that personally. Although disc brakes are good, unless you plan to constantly ride off road I doubt you'd notice a difference and the V brakes are very easy to look after.

With regards to the bike on ebay - if this genuinely is a carbon fibre bike it is an early lugged example and you really need to know what you are looking for if buying a carbon fibre frame. Personally I'd leave that for an enthusiast to buy and restore.
