Presumably you weren't wearing cycling mitts? They are designed to protect the palms of your hands in a fall, give extra padding and absorb sweat. However some designs will give you brown patches on the backs of your hands! If you buy some, buy the best you can afford and a good snug fit or they will squelch around and annoy you.

I end up ridiculouys tan lines in summer:

cycling: tanned arms below s/s top height, minus hands coz of mitts.
legs: below short height (mid- thighs downwards)

not cycling: if hot, I wear a vest, often, so get tanned shoulders, but a different hue from my armms
legs: wear baggy shorts, so bottom of legs get more tanned than knee to thigh bit.

head and neck: get quite brown

midriff: wobblier than it should be, so rarely sees the sun in public
