Well to be fair, Northampton of division 4 (yes, I DO know what they call it now) didn't actually beat Liverpool, did they? They beat a Liverpool REPRESENTATIVE team, in much the same way they may do in a pre-season or testimonial game. The importance of the game/competition can be seen by A) the team Liverpool put out (St. Theresa's blind school could have beaten that lot) and B) the crowd who stayed away in their thousands (myself - seaso - included). It was about 18,000 LFC fans only (the remainder being Cobblers who filled the Anny Road. This Mickey Mouse cup has never caused much glee even if it has been won - Liverpool won it more than any other team but even then, there was no great happiness about it, it comes way down the list of priorities. So, being on the crest of a slump at the moment, I have to report that I feel nothing, one way or the other about this defeat as it means we can now concentrate on mid-table mediocrity.

It always puts a smile on my face when a proper football team dumps one of the Premiership prima donna XI out of a cup, even on penalties. Well done the Cobblers, this will be something to remember for years to come and might finally stop the only references to Northampton in the mainstream media being the 8-2 demolition by Man Utd and George Best all those years ago

I still reminisce about the Mighty Shrimpers successes (draws with Chelsea and liverpool, wins over Man u and Spurs) on a regular basis, especially during bad times (like getting beaten by Northampton the other week !)

Glad to find a closet Southend fan. I used to watch them in my yoof. From the North bank of course. I do remember a few glorious moments; usually end of season matches when they got promoted from the 4th Division (as it was).
