I think we may have to put one of the cats down tomorrow.

She has been with us 15 years, and her sister. Been the healthier of the two but she has lost weight over the last year and isn't that active. Always purrs, always likes a cuddle, but we've been away for a night or two and her belly has really swollen up. Will be an emergency appointment tomorrow.

Compared to her sister (who has no teeth and was very poorly 5 years ago) she has grown old. Been expecting it for a while, her fur went knotted, we brushed and combed it again (short hair cat) but it's usually a sign of other stuff. She has been quite well recently, but the last few days, her belly is hard and inflated.

Not nice, will have to take the kids with me tomorrow.

Really sorry to hear that. Hopefully the vet will be able to do something that will reduce any suffering she may be feeling.

At least, if the worst comes to the worst, you (via the vet) can give her a peaceful comfortable end. Something we'd all wish for, to just fall asleep.

:hugs:

Fingers crossed Foss, not a nice thing to have to do.
My 2 are similar age and I know I'll have the same sort of decisions in the next few years

oh Foss, I am really sorry to hear this. It's not an easy thing to go through but if she is suffering you know what's best.

We've got three, and the other sister gives the five year 'loony' old a run for her money (she has been the one that used the insurance though - really bad gingivitis - no teeth). Been expecting it, but it bloody well happens as you go away - just about to do two days at Alton Towers (but I'm at a loose end anyway as I cant do the big stuff on Docs orders). I could always drive back as we are only 40 miles away.

But she needs checking tomorrow, and I feel she is too old to go through this.

It's unavoidable- it does sound like a lot for a cat that's getting on in years but unfortunately she has to go through it. From what you've written above, it doesn't sound good at all.
My cat died in April of a sudden heart attack in my arms - still miss him a hell of a lot.

Oh dear.. that's always so difficult! Focus on the life she had, the journey, not the end! I find it sometimes helps.
I bed she has a terrific life, in a nice home, lovely food, lots of cuddles and love! A good life.. isn't what we all want?

She is undergoing an ultrasound today so that we know what we are dealing with. Vet thinks its a growth, but can't link it to a particular organ. Cat was purring away during the examination, so she must not be in too much discomfort. We will know a bit morethis afternoon, but the vet said its about looking after her over the coming weeks/months.
