Firstly i come from a mountain biking background and am fairly new to this mixing it up with the internal combustion engine mode of transport.
I have been full time commuting, 12 miles each way for the last Four weeks and it has been a very pleasent way to get to work.
My commute consists of Five miles off -road and a Seven mile stretch on a rural wide sweeping B road.
As i work shifts i miss the mad rush hours but yesterday i finished at 16:30 and had to cycle in the torrential rain.
I could not take up my usual position in the road, as it was like cycling in a river, thus i had to cycle alittle further out.
I had Three good rear lights on but could not believe the number of motorist that did not slow down or give me any room at all.
Going past within feet of me at Sixty is quite scarry experience and i was glad when i got home.

Know what you mean. The wind suck from a heavy vehicle passing close and at speed is a real scare

Happily most give me room but the odd inconsiderate realy makes sure I'm regular

Where is your "usual position in the road"?

The other thing is that you say that you have "Three good rear lights", the problem with most cycle lights is that they really aren't bright enough in poor conditions, which is why I advocate using DiNotte rear lights

not cheap, but they really make a difference, even in full daylight.

I'd would advise you to keep it up! When I first started cycle commuting 16 months ago during both rush hours, I had experiences that I can only describe as terrifying. I was clipped on both sides almost simultaneously whilst waiting to turn right once.

However now I'm a much better, more aware and calmer rider and I really enjoy 99% of my commutes - even in the rain

There where some considerate motorist that went onto the other side of the road but most just shot pass me, scarry when you could hear a HGV approaching at Sixy MPH, made me tense up and has made me think about the risk i'm taking doing this commuting lark.

HJ, Impressive rear light you have.
I had Two flashing CateyeTL-LD170 on the top and bottom of my rucksack and a Superflash on constant on my seat post, as well as reflective strips and stickers on my rucksack.

Forgot to answer your question HJ! i normal cycle on the White line that runs down the side of the road, at about three foot from the grass verge.
