Out on cycle ride and nearing home (about 6 miles to go) me and the wife decided to stop at a pub for a coffee and maybe a bite to eat. We drive past the pub in question alot but have never been in there, and outside is a large banner and blackboard with meal deals advertised.

Stopped outside and as they have tables / chairs outside we leaned the bikes against the wall and i went inside.
I was wearing 3/4 baggy shorts and a standard red bike jacket, in i went, the waitress / owner / whoever she was looked me up and down and said "I hope you dont want to eat" and walked off.

I went to the bar and asked if we could have a tea and a coffee, the barman grumpily said yeah and went away muttering something.

I got the tea and coffee, no tray, nothing and took them outside.

Now, my money is as good as anyones. This pub will not get my cash again, and nor will i take them up on their offers. I have often said to the wife we must pop in for a meal, now, no chance.

I should say that the place was almost empty so i would have thought a bit of business would have been good.

I am not annoyed or angry, more disapointed in the attitude of the place.

That attitude never ceases to amaze me. Why be in a public facing business if you don't like facing the public? The pub business seems to be suffering more than most so my guess is that whichever pub it was will either soon have a for sale sign on it or will be looking for new management.

I think once the waitress had made the first remark, I'd have said "well, no, actually, I wanted to speak to someone about booking a large dinner function", then turned and walked out....

Failing that, tell everyone you know who might ever drop in there for a meal....

I go to a pub with a wonderful atmosphere, run by great people, who unfortunately know that business is diabolical. But until they close the doors they will continue to make people as welcome as friends.
Ignore the place and take your money elsewhere, there's plenty that will welcome you.

I wont name and shame as i have emailed them to see what they say.

Not that it makes any difference, but i could have been mistaken for a walker / rambler if they didnt see the bikes.

The same kind of thing happened to us in Cornwall. We turned up at a pub at 1:40pm and tried to get some food. A sign said that food was available until 2pm... "Sorry, the kitchen's closed". I bought some drinks and asked if we could eat some sandwiches which we had on the table outside. "Sorry, you can't picnic here.."

The place was nearly empty. Do publicans like that have some kind of a death wish?

Had that up north too. Rude they were.

It seems to be a problem here in the UK. In other countries they are only too happy to help, but when it comes to Britain, It is as if everything would work perfectly if only those pesky customers didn't keep getting in the way.

Its something that I've come across with Café's, from time to time, it puzzles me, why turn customers away? surly they don't make that much money the can afford to do that? Theres a Café to the north of Coventry that used to be on the club ride list regularly but hasn't been used for a while, I turned up a couple of Sundays ago on my own to be informed that they don't serve food on Sunday mornings anymore as it interferes with their Sunday lunches, I eventually persuaded them to serve me a toasted teacake. When I got back I posted on the club website and informed the lads they wouldn't get any food if they turned up there on a Sunday morning.
