Lately I've been listening to a band called Phosphorescent, and they're totally brilliant. Likewise another band called Calexico - both of these are well established but much better than the bland rubbish that passes for indie these days...

Thanks for the tips. I'll keep an eye out. Coincidentally I heard the Arctic Monkeys on the radio for the first time yesterday afternoon. Brilliant to hear somebody singing a very British song in a very British accent.

My current fave is Show Of Hands but they, despite being brilliant, have too much of a folk background (although I don't think you could describe them as folk) to be regarded as finger-on-the-pulse stuff. Definitely recommend their Best Of.

Do like Calexico. Saw them a while back with their mate Howe Gelb - he and his Giant Sand outfit are good value too.

Got to be careful though - one minute it's americana, the next you're up to your ears in out and out C+W.

Just been checking Show of Hands out, nothing new there but quality stuff. +1 for Calexico.
