hi all,

i've been asked to come up with a route for a charity walk. it's to be around 10miles or so for about 20'ish people.

they want to do something 'iconic' or something that sounds tough, e.g. walking over the forth road bridge from Fife (inverkeithing) to Edinburgh.

as i cycle it most days i've been asked to come up with it but the only way i know once we get past dalmeny with a pavement is along the main road (which is a bit noisy and not exactly scenic).

what i'd like advice on is:
- what is the best way to walk from the bridge to edinburgh?
- is there anywhere else we could go that still means going over the bridge?

all suggestions gratefuly received,

Cheers,
Cam

I dont know that area enough, but having spent many holidays in Scotishland isn't it worth trying a route that isnt bike/car friendly...there are some pretty impressive hills with well known names that you can get about on...Cairngorm, Nevis, Modaliath (not sure on spelling).

they would all be pretty iconic and i've enjoyed climbing them all at many different times of the year...does it have to be local to Fife?

Perhaps walk the distance of Loch-Ness, Inverness to the Lochmans gates at the other end...no hills and only the tourists to dodge

thanks for the reply jonny... it's more has to be local to edinburgh really (as everyone either lives or will be staying there). i.e. it has to either end up in edinburgh or be easily travelled back to edinburgh.

also, we have big variances in physical ability, i.e. a few in the number wouldn't be able to cope with much more than a flattish walk (and even then i'm sure they will be slow/want to stop/etc).

What about start from North Queensferry, over FR bridge, into South Queensferry, then coastal path to Cramond, down through Granton, Newhaven and finish at RY Britannia in Ocean terminal? With the Queens(ferries), and Royal Yacht, the more imaginative than me could dream up a regal name for the walk.

Or good cycle/footpaths from Granton or Newhaven which will take you up to New Town to finish in Central Edinburgh?

Can you get across the water at Cramond as the ferry stopped running years ago? Otherwise it would be a good walk along quite a good path - a lot longer than 10 miles though if you were heading on in to Edinburgh.
Or turn right after the bridge and walk along to Blackness, again a fair path but you would need picked up there.
