That may be a little extreme, but perhaps it was love. If so, I think even that kind of gap is not a barrier.

As long as there is love age, wealth, looks etc matter little.

My ex was 20 years older than me.
She was very very attractive and we were together 3.5 years....and engaged...but things in our lives changed...but we are still on talking terms and parted on very good terms....although there were sad moments at the end of course.
