Not quite as stupid as sacking Bobby Robson, but not far off. Newly promoted and sitting mid-table - what more do they honestly think they're going to get with a new manager?

I agree. I couldn't quite believe that. He's produced a hard-working, entertaining team which have secured promotion and mid-table safety in a very short time. So they don't win every match. Hardly surprising. The board seem to be more concerned that he isn't a celebrity manager... morons.

you are having a laugh!

(edit). You are not. Extraordinary. Given the success they've had with hiring and firing managers over the last few years (Sam Allardyce, anybody?) you'd think they'd leave well alone.

The sacking comes just over a month after they beat bitter local rivals Sunderland 5-1 and won 1-0 at Arsenal.

Typical short sightedness from a football club. Manager takes over a club in total disarray and in free fall. Guide them to the Premiership. Sitting mid table after wins over Arsenal and bitter rivals Sunderland. And the board want a manager with more experience to take the club forward. Pathetic.

On the other hand I have no sympathy what so ever with Chris Houghton being ex-Spurtz and all.

They've blown the dust of the self-destruct button, what a ridiculous decision. It's funny reading the toon fans on facebook status updates though, they are not pleased.

On the bright side, it means someone half-decent is available to take over at West Ham when Avram gets the chop.

unfortunately the writing was on the wall from a while back. once Colin calderwood left, and Hughton couldn't bring in his own man (former ireland boss Brian Kerr). Most in Ireland thought he should have told Ashley where to stick his job. I wonder if any of the player's egos were hurt yesterday after Hughton kept them in dressing room for an hr, and some of them blurted to Ashley to get rid of Hughton.

Fergie took a while to settle at Man Utd nearly got the sack. Man City sacked Peter Reid when they were top half of the table then got through about 2 or 3 managers a season until they ended up in the same league as Stockport County. There is definitely something to be said for continuity. Sometimes impatience is fan generated but in this case seems to be from the top. You would have thought they would learn.
