But what relevance does it have to my life now i can't say. For example, what do the following lyrics mean: "Everyone's beneath the trees, feeding pigeons on a limb. But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here, all the pigeons gonna run to him."

As far as I can see the UK charts didn't start until 1953, but number one in the US charts for August 1947 was the Harmonicats with Peg O' My Heart.

UK charts Paul Anka- Diana, don't remember hearing it before now.
US charts Honeycomb - Jimmy Rodgers, I do remember hearing this one, well maybe not the same day I was born. I was more of an Elvis fan as a newborn and infant. Hound Dog was my favorite song until I was well into my teens.
