coz i won an award at work and they are sending me to Boston to pick it up!!! :hyper:

as you know I've been cycle rep for a few years and I've been training the cyclists and working with @simon.r and a couple of the Fleet guys on vehicle safety for cyclists so we are all being sent to Boston to find out if we are runner up or winner of the highest award in the company in the safety category. We are up against some STIFF competition but either way its massively big thing for us. And I'm also massively proud of our company for taking cycle safety so seriously.

Have a great time in Boston. When do you fly out.?

Its really good to hear that there are companies out there who take cycling and cycle safety seriously. Good luck with the awards.

Well done @buggi
Enjoy your time over there - I hope it's not just a fly in, attend and fly straight back kind of gig, 'cos there's lots to see - and bring back the top award!

I'm off to Boston as well^_^

I'm sure I can speak for @buggi if I say that when we started* working to improve cycle safety in our company the last thought in our minds was winning an award. Our company runs 3000+ vehicles in the UK (and a lot of this work will filter down to contractors who must run as many vehicles again), so even if our efforts impact on only a percentage of our drivers it will have been worthwhile.

Amongst many other things we've either instigated or driven through:

  • Internal door stickers warning drivers to look out for cyclists (to try and stop 'dooring')
  • Extra mirrors / bleepers / video cameras on HGV's
  • Side skirts installed on HGV's
  • Safe routes around depots
  • Safer routes to and from permanent and temporary works
  • Raising awareness of cycle safety through company wide briefings
Nothing revolutionary, but all good stuff and we now have a small group of people who will continue to seek out and implement ways of improving the safety of cyclists around our vehicles. To be fair to everyone within our company we've largely been pushing against open doors, but this award will make life easier for us when we want to implement further improvements.

So, a great personal result and hopefully a good result for ALL road cyclists:thumbsup:

*buggi's been banging the drum a lot longer than I have!

The plane will be flying whether @buggi is on it or not.

True but not infinitely extendable.
Few things are, more's the shame. Unlikely @buggi will be the tipping point.

I once flew back from Dubai on an Airbus that has three crews on board and less than forty passengers, we all got asked to move to business class (still only got coach meals mind) to make it less work for the crew actually crewing what was otherwise a staff shuttle bus.

My friend's family of four were the only passengers on a flight from Tenerif to Wales. They were outnumbered by the cabin staff.
