Off Today

I have been offed today, had someone pull out onto a roundabout right in front of me and as soon as I braked I had lost it. Fortunately I didn't hit the car but I did land heavily on the ground.

My enraged shouts must have been heard because, give the lady her due, she stopped and came over to see if I was okay even though the shouts were possibly more offensive than I would like to admit. Fair play to her.

Surprisingly I was alright, I picked up the various objects that had flown off the bike and quickly checked out the bike. It seemed okay so I got back on and took the bike home.

Once at home I was glad to see the bike stood up to it quite well, a small buckle to the back wheel and the plasticky hanging down bit of the mudguard was off. The helmet showed scuff marks from the road and my jacket was muddied but not ripped. For sure i was grateful for the helmet tonight.

All in all it could have been worse.

not a good day for stopping today, the roads seemed slick, I took it dead easy and still had a few nasty near accidents, good to hear you;re ok and the driver did the right thing

He also stated that here was no collision between the vehicles. not sure hw easy it would be to lodge a claim if there was no collision.

Nasty. I hope you and your bike recover quickly. Did you swap details? Even though there was no collision, you accident was as a result of another's mistake. They should pay for any damage IMO.

I don't know, but it is certainly worth investigating, especially if you have witnesses.

Hope you got the details - scuffed helmet = a new one - just been there myself. - I've been in for a 'quote' on my scuffed parts of my bike - nothing damaged, but 'should be put right'.

She caused your accident by pulling out - road surface dumped you to the floor.

Bikes do stand up to damage quite well - my MTB was reasonable OK - just my shoulder that isn't....

Without some independent witnesses I imagine it would be very difficult to go the insurance route. If she's a decent sort, then she might stump up for a new wheel. Any insurance company would fight it "because you just fell off, right?"

One possibility might be to mutter about insurance, and then point out that her excess would probably cover the cost of fixing your bike.

Ouch, sorry to hear it. Must have been something in the air. Some old guy nearly turned into me this morning, I was turning left from the main road and he was coming in the opposite direction and turning off at the same exit.
Hope your bike is ok. Funnily enough my back wheel was buckled slightly in my fall.

Thanks all, I got straight back on the bike today. Managed to get the wheel straight last night. So, other than a bit of an ache in the wrist I was relieved to not have had any real problems this morning.

I must say though that it has really hit my confidence at the moment and I seem to be far more wary of other road users. As for the road surfaces yes they have been awful, the salt has been lifted by the rain and they are so slippery at the moment. It was a twitchy run home tonight.

To be honest the lady did show concern that myself and the bike were okay and did offer to give details. Looking back though I did only give the bike a quick once over before declining details and carrying on home but it looks like things have worked out well in the end, the bike is okay.

As for the insurance companies not paying out for near misses I will try to remember that when taking evasive action but self preservation is always the over riding concern .
