Yesterday's club ride, 6 of us. 2 abreast in a line of 3. I was at the back. From the undergrowth appears a cat and decides, in blind panic, to run down the middle of the line and between the bikes... except it veered right when it got to me and under my front wheel. I remember looking down briefly at my foot and thinking I wasn't going to be able unclip, so decided to just fall onto my upper arm. I land in a heap and watch the cat as it disappears down the road and back into the undergrowth.Concern turns to laughter as I get up and announce 'merde, putain de chat'. My first off in 7 years.

Was it a black one?

Ooooh. Exactly the same happened to me many years ago when one ran under the front wheel and I went down with a crash, breaking my new watch and tearing my trendy new jacket (no cycling clothes then).

The cat ran off but I did wonder if he was OK, they often run off even when badly injured.

This is the way of cats, I'm afraid. Ours hangs out at the bottom of the drive, watches me approach, gauges the closing gap, works out if he can dart across in front of me, decides I'm too close, reckons a quick sprint would still work, realises that I've continued to close the gap whilst he's been thinking, then, as I'm right on top of him, goes for it.

Every bleedin time.

A guy I work with was out on his £5000 Trek Madone when he hit a cat and came off. Totally wrecked it when he came off.
Luckily for him he had good insurance, just a freak accident but very costly

Ours used to casually adjust her position, as we weaved about, for maximum annoyance then, when she'd ensured everything around her had ground to a complete bone juddering stop, would saunter off.... took her 17 years to perfect it.

I was wearing my new stoopidly expensive Assos Mille bibs for the 1st time and damn near my first thought was whether I'd torn them! That would have p*ssed me off big time!

+1

Mine likes to sit on the top stair when I'm about to go downstairs. Repeated remonstrations that she'll not get fed if she kills me have as yet had no effect.

I was wondering if they were intelligent enough to get out of the way. I have had a few near-misses, but no hits yet.

Perhaps we need a road-kill (or road-hit) thread detailing our attempts to cull the UK wildlife?

Or maybe not...

I live on a road that borders a local park and squirrels are bloody everywhere at the moment. I really don't want to ht one but it seems suicide by bike is something they're all trying to achieve!
