Five days later and after four nights of being unable to sleep on my right-hand side due to the pain (and a trip to the Dr's on day two because it hurt so much - she said I've probably bruised the bone but other than that it's OK), I now have a bruise that is about 5" long and 4" wide and is deep purple!

It is so impressive that I will try to take a photo that preserves my modesty ...

I did something very similar last September. No traffic around, coming to a junction that is complex, busy, but slow, where I realised I dont always signal (because it is downhill and tricky and I need both hands on the bars) and so cars are not always sure what I am up to. I thought "I should get myself into the habit of signalling". Right hand out, left hand on brake, wobble, fly though the air, attempt to brake with face, come to embarrassed halt 5m from bike.

Damage to me: skin burns all over right side of face, (looked much worse than they hurt) big swelling beside right eye, chipped tooth, massive bruises on leg, hip and shoulder where I landed, broken specs, dent in helmet. No damage to bike.

I have a matching pair gravel rash scars on my right hip!!!!

I can just picture the scene

This bruise caused me to limp (severely for first 2 weeks) for 5 weeks !! turned a corner on wet gravel and wet down like a sack of spuds.

in france at the time, 2 hours later couldn't walk or even put my toe on the ground, organisers thought i'd broken so had to be seen by the HOTTEST french doctor EVER. Every cloud....

i was convinced it was broken but was assured by both french and english docs that soft tissue damage can feel worse than a broken bone. must have really bled inside because the whole of my hip and groin was very painful for weeks.

bruise was pure purple/black at one point

I sympathise with the pain, Buggi! Last night was the first night that I have been able to sleep on my right side in moderate comfort!

Oh, and as regards the bruise ... mine's bigger than yours!
