I am trying to do some regular short rides after work on my new road bike......I'm (mostly) loving it.
I don't use 'Strava' or any sort of SmartPhone....there is actually NO SIGNAL of any sort in the steeply wooded valley on the edge of lovely flat Dartmoor where I live.......but I have enjoyed mapping out a selection of little 10 mile-type jaunts from my cottage door on 'ridewithgps.com', if only for the pleasure of watching (at home) the little blue dot speed up the hefty elevations and imagine myself doing same.......

BUT........

I have just realised that nearly every ride has a Country Pub along the route which sell BEER of the delicious real variety.

'SHorely Jusht coinshiDence,?' I hear you say..........but

............do I have a problem here?

Should I re-route my routes via more Vicarage Tea Parties or simply ride past these horrid little country taverns with nerves of steel whilst sucking on a ghastly nutri-gel pouch?

All help much appreciated

Just make sure you do said rides on nice warm days, with plenty of grass verges to take a nap on along the way while the effects of the previous stop wear off

Thanks Nigel,

And apologies to the kind mod who had to move my post from the Begginers section to here.....my question was meant to be actually semi-serious, in fact, so thought others starting out on regular ride programmes might identify with it............but now, re-reading it...it seems a bit erroneous. Sorry!

I'll try to be a bit less flippant in future.

nah, this is the serious part of the forum!

what you should do is add an extra 5 miles to your route allowing you to stop at the pub, earning your pint and all that.

my houesemates at uni and I went mountain biking on cannock a few times, each time, about 1/5 to go someone would shout "earn your pint" which was the cue to get back to the car / to the pub as quick as possible - last there buys the round.

was a bit manic and often painful sprinting that distance off road, especially since I had a single speed towards the end of our time together, think I only lost once...

Consider this thought - given the speed at which you are riding, you probably need the stop to replenish fluid that you will have lost through perspiration. And the carbohydrate in the Beer will be good energy food to complete the ride with.

I used to do a 30 mile loop with a couple of friends; with a country pub 4 miles before the end, obviously to replace fluid and carbohydrate lost during the ride.

Sometimes however, perhaps we replaced too much fluid; as the final 4 miles home were sometimes ridden in a state, which I believe when used by newspapers to describe politicians sometimes is, of being tried and emotional.

Not sure about your beer habit, but the smartphone apps generally work by logging your ride then uploading it to their website afterwards, once you have a signal or wifi. You don't need a phone signal all the time, just gps.
