Absolutely, saw this guy on a documentary in the week re the Eiger, what was thought "unclimable" early part of last century, he can now do in under 3 hours - unbelievable.

Excellent documentary that, Mrs VC and I are looking to holiday in Wengen next summer and get in some serious walking around the Eiger.
The thought of trying to climb that thing without modern equipment and any kind of long range weather forecasts as they did in the 30s seems suicidal.

That is filmed in Cambridge.
I thought I recognised the location. Read about it in the local paper, that residents were complaining of the banging noises as kids flung themselves from building to building. It is bloody impressive!

I guess, although a lot of it is about technology. Impressive as that is, most of that isn't 'climbing' in the traditional sense (and I used to free climb, so I know a little about this). I was actually much more impressed by the Parkour kids, using nothing but their bodies and their wits. That seems to me to have more of the spirit of adventure and a joy in being in your own body about it. IMHO, of course.

The guy who free-climbed the Eiger (and the Grandes Jorasses and the Matterhorn) is super-fit and has got his mind completely around the fear factor. His equipment is the best but more importantly he is lucky to find the weather perfect and the snow and ice in perfect condition for fast, confident front-pointing. It's said that the Eiger north face doesn't hold as much snow and ice as it used to and that nowadays it's mostly a rock climb with waterfalls and the danger of rock-fall. The way to do it fast is by confident moving on excellent hard frozen snow when everything is frozen solid and for that it needs to be winter and the weather perfect. Modern clothing can cope with the cold in a way wool, cotton and oilskins couldn't.

Why do they want to do the free jumping stuff, one slip or a trip from any point of contact on anything over 2m [if any of the parapets or walls they use are loose or frost damaged then the building owner is the one paying out for injury!] .... just..... why???
