Well, our backup USB 1TB drive died instantly a month or so back. Just 2 months out of bloody warrenty !

Argh.

Thought it time to update technology, as we don't use the main pc much now, only for file sharing. So off I toddled and bought a Seagate Central 2TB NAS. Plugged into router, and bingo works. Can even access it from my phone anywhere, from work, etc etc. Whoo. Clever stuff.

Kids are impressed they can watch movies from anywhere that are stored on the drive.

ooh. Can you see it from iphone/iPad?

I love NAS boxes, they are so useful. You looked into FreeNAS? It's a FreeBSD based distribution with a fatastic web frontend for everything.

So does that mean you can stream movies across the network onto the iPad then using the TV out from the ipod, end up meaning you can stream movies to your tv via the ipad?

Yes. Ive already played the demo movies on my phone and Samsung tab and with the right connector you can output to the telly.

I will play with the ipad tonight. We use the xbox to play movies. If you have a smart telly they can connect as well.

Best bit it was 120 quid.

.

Congratulation on the new NAS. Great bit of kit . Ond thing to consider is that if you can access it just think who else might get at it. I hope you are using a strong password

Password is strong. Access is via Seagates web page anyway. Will read up a little on security of NAS drives.
Give me your IP address ;) , sure the webserver/ssh/nfs/samba it runs is out of date and insecure...

I have a Western Digital one. They're brilliant. Good choice IMO as an improvement on USB drives.

Use for automatic real time backup of everything on computers and smartphones at home, and via the internet on request when away.

Not only a strong password for internet access but another level of security as well which covers everything.

I also have a twice a week scheduled reminder set up to make sure I check that the data is being stored and is retrievable - just as important as the backup itself!

Google is your friend, but when I got mine I only looked at the well known brands (Seagate and WD being two), and at the warranties. Also be careful if you want remote access, at that time (about 2 years ago) some didn't have it.

It was worrying, but the cheapest source for mine at the time was PC World online.
