I think he's only about 50 in this picture, but he lived to be 95.

He made a one-off appearance in M.A.S.H. before becoming a regular as well.

He'd done that with an earlier series, he was a recurring character, then got his own show. He was on a show called December Bride, with Spring Byington, as an occasional character, and then was on Pete and Gladys as the co-star. So says Wikipedia, I don't recall seeing any of this, except a couple of episodes of December Bride when baseball games got rained out.
