Hi, can you use an 'older' chainset that was originally made for 8/16 speed set-ups (ie. 3/32" chains) with new 10 speed chains and a 10spd system?

I know that the 10spd chain is narrower but is this the external or internal width? Will the chain sit on the teeth OK? Or should I buy new chainrings specifically for 10 speed?

Cheers

Most of the width difference is on the outside. But 10 speed chains vary and so do chainrings. It might work but I'd guess it probably won't. Replacing the chainrings will - modern ones are usually the right thickness (thinness?) for 10 speed. The rings and spacing are the same just the teeth are thinner.
