Yesterday I had some fun. I was cycling along when behind me I heard the unmistakable sound of someone messing up a gear change. I carried on and a few seconds later he came by. A bloke on a shiny time trial bike complete with pointy helmet. Now when I say he came by he was possibly cycling 2mph faster than me. After weaving around a bit he pulled into line in front of me - all of 2 metres ahead. Of course I was now in his slip stream so 20mS later I was on his wheel. He was really trying hard but he kept weaving and looking around at me - probably wondering why, with all his fancy gear, he could not drop an old bloke on a normal bike. He had no number on so I thought he was fair game. Not being in a time trial myself (I was on the way back from the pub) rules about slip streaming did not bother me.

A couple of miles later he sat up and turned off - and I must admit to a "show-boating" undertake at speed. Had a smile on my face for miles.

...I'm guessing it was a new bike and perhaps his first ride on it. He will get better (I hope!).

I've sailed past triathletes with my Dawes galaxy and single pannier bag. They had all the gear and no idea - most of them were pulling too high a gear.

Equally I've been sailed past by a pensioner in a mobility scooter and I didn't have enough in my legs to catch up and draft her.

I've never drafted a lone cyclist. Like @Aperitif said, it's so un Cycle Chat.

I consider myself to be rapidly sliding into the 'Old bloke' sector of the cycling world but it still never fails to amaze me just how spectacularly poor cyclists some of these young'ns 'with all the gear' can be. Just today when driving over to Derbyshire I had a wry smile when I saw a young bloke riding his TT bike up the rough pavement alongside the A57 Mottram Moor. The traffic was pretty heavy, just grinding along at 10-15mph so he should have had no problem just slipping in with the vehicles and keeping pace. This was a bona-fide full-on TT bike with mega deep profile rims, Tri-bars(?) and an aero fin stuck out the back of the seat tube/post.

I would have been playing with the cars on my MTB in those conditions

How boring, racing somebody who does not know they are in a race.

OP, that guy you overtook was in training for a double ironman, he had swam 5 miles and was 220 miles into his cycling session, did you do the same.

Post your official race results up if you want to impress. It seems some of you think people should not spend money on kits or bikes until they can do a 19 minute 10. Which of course most of you could not do, stop belittling fellow cyclist, you seem to write little about the real races you did not win.

....now can someone remind me what this thread was about? Oh, and why did I come upstairs?
Rocksworth, you were upstairs about to 'will he or wont he' wave (according to what you haven't read yet - or you think you did but have forgotten.) Now, get on your chair and sit quietly. The News will be on in a minute, and your supper will be on in a minute too. (The floor).

Why are you upstairs again?
