Yes, I know there's some on Ebay but they're either too far away to collect or the sellers seem to be incapable of communication, so ...

If anybody knows of an old Singer treadle sewing machine in good condition that's up for grabs at a reasonable price within say a 2.5 hour drive of Tunbridge Wells, I'd be delighted to know of it

Needs to this type of thing complete, working and with tidy woodwork.

Reason for this post - the Lady Wife's just announced that she'd love one as a treat when she finishes chemotherapy next month and I'm trying very hard to get her one ...

I would love to be able to help but I only have an old hand powered one. If you want it it's yours.

That's extremely decent of you, sir, but she already has an old hand-powered Singer she sews with. The plan now is to get a treadle machine ('cos she's set her heart on one) and keep the hand one for spares. This is for sewing with, btw, not for putting in a corner of ones orangery for ones guests to be amused by. One is not like that ;)

Seriously though, thank you anyhow.

That's quite OK. I'll keep my ears open for you

That's quite a rare item so you may need tolook further afield, you could get it delivered via courier for not too high a cost- what are your reservations? Is if being able to check if it's in working order etc?

Well, to my complete surprise, I tracked one down earlier this afternoon and have just got back with a lovely 1900-built Singer 27 in good working order, complete with immaculate Sphinx stransfers and loads of bits, for which I paid just £25.

Mind you, the round trip must have used the best part of two gallons of diesel, but The Lady Wife is thrilled to bits with it so it's all good ...

That's until she runs a needle through her finger - hope you're brave enough to pull it out!
My Gran used to do that fairly often when she was a machinist - apparently she used to just reverse it using the wheel and then snip the cotton before pulling it through xx(

I still have her treadle Singer and used to love using it. Haven't needed to sew anything for years so it sits at the top of the stairs, we haven't got an orangerie ;)
