Saw my uncle for the first time in 10 years. He's been riding all his life, most of it competitively. We agreed to go out for some rides together.

My average speed for my rides tends to be about 22-23kmh. I asked him what his is and he said as long as he's between 25-27kmh, he's happy.

He's 75 and I'm not so keen to go riding with him anymore!

I'm seriously impressed with some of the responses here. Great to think of cyclists still riding in their eighth decade and beyond.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
Gerry Shields is 86 and still puts 'em in. Good lad.

Wayfarers..

The Wednesday turnout is about seventy strong. And the average age is close on seventy. When you think about it - that's a lot of experience on the road at the same time.

I'm in the Cheam and Morden. We call the Midweek Wayfarers 'the old farts'. And I'm sometimes the youngest rider on a C+M ride!

The average age is dropping! There are a few early retireds like me in mid 50's and some even younger occasional riders.

One of the regulars in his 80's broke the 100 mile TT over 80's record a year or so ago - i'm not sure of the exact time but it was sub 5 hours!

The longest/fastest "a" group ride this year was 83* miles over the North Downs, 14mph average, 1000+m of climbing - not bad for a bunch of old farts!

* including my ride out n back, but most have similar additions to the basic ride.

I did an 80 miler with a guy nearing his mid-70s and he wiped the floor with me... (I'm 29, and pretty strong and fit myself. Maybe in 45 years I'll be quicker?)

I once rode a 100 mile reliability ride, with an 82 yr old in the group. He helped to make the pace for about 80 miles. Said he was spending part of the summer cycling in the Pyrenees. Way to go, I would say ;0)

On my last tour I spent a couple of agreeable evenings in the company of a very nice Danish gentleman at a campsite close to Magdeburg - in conversation he revealed he could remember London in 1946 - My curiosity was too much for me and after a bit of calculation he revealed he was 82 - On a very nice Koga with a trailer that doubled as a chair - Cycled from Copenhagen - did not do much cycling in 2008 as he was having his second hip replacement

I am a sprog compared to some described earlier.

However, I was out with my chum in Hertfordshire a couple of years ago and, as was the wanted custom, called in at the local garden centre for a cake stop.

Whilst noshing my second scone and jam, I heard some "civilian" behind remark, that cycling ought to be banned - some of our party in their late 70s looked far too healthy and would be drawing their pensions for years to come. Not good for the economy!!!!
