Depends what type of Conti tyres you have at the moment, I use conti tyres, Contacts (for commuting) and wouldn't change them but my brother had knobblies on his mtb and changed them for Marathon Plusses and found it made a significant difference (its used on road and paths mainly and light tracks with the kids).

I have these at the moment - Continental Sport Contact 622-37C

Those are lighter (faster) than Marathon Plus', but the M+'s are supposed to be near as damnit indistructable\unpuncturable...but heavy. You pays your money...

Yep, as you know, I decided to also do the ride home, so 20 miles round trip!

The return trip, I managed 10.67 miles in 59 mins, 10.8 mph avg. Which considering what I'd done that day, and what I'd never done before... I was well happy with! Though by then, after that day, I don't think I could've done another mile or anything close, I was knackered.

Cheers for helping me on the first 5 or so miles on the way back, was a great help to get me going.

Must have been about 20miles total yesterday HockeyNut, hows the legs and bum feeling today?

You know what, it's surprisingly fine mate, well I wouldn't say 100%, but 90%, barely any noticeable sign yet.... which is what I'm worried about. lol Maybe it'll kick in tomorrow!

Hoping to still be fine for Yoga-type-class this evening. Wont be back on the bike for a day or 2 methinks though, just incase! I have a feeling if I were to sit on it now, I'd know about it!

Just noticed you are based in Nottingham - what's your journey? Where are you going from and to?

I expect once you've been doing it a month or two, you'll be averaging around the 15mph mark - quick than the car?

Hi Jezston. My commute is from Hucknall to West Bridgford (and back).

Thanks everyone, I do hope to make it a more regular thing. Although I will reserve judgement until I see what I feel like in a bit!

However..... I think now I understand the road bike reasoning. lol Nevermind, only another 11 months on this one before I can get road bike on the cyclescheme!

I can't understand why the staff in many bike stores think 'Blokey wants to CYCLE TO WORK. I know, I'll sell him a mountainbike'

How idiotic.

The assistant in a bike store near me (NOT my LBS) sold one of my punters a £400 full suspension mountainbike for use on the Swansea to Mumbles cyclepath. Which is flat. And Tarmac. Twat.

Now to be fair. Despite it being a CTW scheme, my remit to the LBS was not for a commuter (and they knew that was quite common).

I wanted something all rounder, for summer rides with the missus primarily.

Woohoo, managed it again! It felt easier this time, I was less apprehensive about whether I would make it in even, as I knew I'd done it before! Pumped the tires up a bit harder too and knocked 5 minutes off my time!

As for the commute back, not looking likely, muchos rain about I believe.
