Give her a bit of space - by my reckoning there is still 30ish days of this one to enjoy

Yep, have updated my return date. I'm here for another month.

Just heading for a well-earned couple of days off with fellow CCer Cathryn near San Fran .

I won't be jumping straight into another tour. I fancy staying in one place for a while so have a vague plan to go and learn Spanish somewhere then maybe do a tour in South America.

You might as well keep going south then

San Fransisco is a great place, real character compared to most American cities. Not great for cycling though, the hills!!!

I too have been enjoying the blog ... though I only read it in largish chunks... every now and again ... and have to remember where I got upto last time... IIRC I think I stopped at 1st Oct thinking that would be an easy date to remember. Do your family read it as well?

...and San Fransisco beat the Texas Rangers in the World series! What a time to be there - 'world champion' time!

And we must have just missed the parade in town. Cathryn's gutted.

If I could pick a place to learn Spanish, which you lucky so-and-so can!, it would be in Oaxaca in Mexico. Wonderful place and full of infromal Spanish teaching schools suffering because the Yanks are too scared to go there any more.

You really are doing a trip of a lifetime!

Yes, Santa Barbara is on my route.  Any tips or recommendations?
Well....not sure how you're planning on coming into SB but both San Marcos Pass (Hwy 154) and the 101 can be a bit dangerous.....the 101 is wider so probably less so, just beware of the heavy side winds that can blow you around. San Marcos Pass is beautiful though, and there is a fantastic old coaching stop (now a bar/cafe/restaurant) called Cold Springs Tavern, it's  great place to hang out on a Saturday or Sunday, good live music too. There is a campground at Lake Cachuma where I spent a lot of time as a kid - it was lovely but I haven't been there in years now. The view on the pass coming down the mountain into Santa Barbara is amazing. If you go down the 101 there is a nice campground right on the beach at Gaviota.

There is a lovely cycle path starting in Isla Vista near UCSB, actually there are cycle paths and lanes all over there that are pretty good.

If you're in Santa Barbara on a Sunday there is a neat arts and crafts fair along Cabrillo Blvd (road running next to the beach downtown) The Mission is beautiful too, well worth riding by or stopping for a visit if you have time.

Where are you planning on staying?

On your way down from SF you should make a point of riding on Hwy 1 through Big Sur, you probably were planning on it anyway because the other routes down are not that great for cycling.  I think it must be one of the most beautiful places in California! There are some lovely campgrounds right next to the river, I used to go to one called "Fernwood" quite a bit -  Ahhh....  I do miss it.....

wow, their rates have sure gone up.....

I'm not sure what else to tell you - let me know if you have any questions!!!!
