I never look at records for my urban commute, with traffic lights & cars & people. I don't want any incentive to improve on times when there are so many unconscious split-second decisions to be made. The same sort of unconscious image-processing that the brain does that blinds (some) drivers to cyclists can do similar to cyclists who have priorities of speed jostling with the priorities of safety. (I include myself in that assessment - but knowing that the brain can play funny tricks can be a key part of keeping the balance of speed v. safety on the correct side.)
And I discount my own 'records' unless they are round trips returning to the starting point, to negate as much as possible the 'wind assisted' or 'downhill assisted'. Apart from the time I did 5 miles at 26.4mph, of course. (I'm sure that had nothing to do with a 160ft drop in elevation and a tailwind all the way.)
Having said that, it's still nice when you break a record/target of your own.
