I have completed the majority of my Tax Form on line, but would like to print a copy in case of any unfortunate incident. Has anyone managed to do this? Or do I get that option when I go to Submit my form?

Edit My mind had been obviously boggled  I now that I can print each page that I have completed

It was not the form itself that was complicated, but the logistics, ie the Hmrc site not liking Aol etc.

Does anyone know about Capital Gains? Is a Chargeable Event the same as a Capital Gain. nb No I have not made millions selling property in Central London, I have made a teensy weensy gain on a Life Assurance Policy. If you can explain the difference in plain English that would be heplful.

Anyone else enjoying the challenge of On-line Tax forms?

I used to have to do a paper one for years and then, joy of joys - let the bells ring out, they wrote and told me I didn't have to do one anymore.

God it was a dreadful task - I couldn't even get my name right.

*shudder*

That's not much help really...sorry...

The paper one I could cope with, very few boxes for me to fill in. I - rashly I now know - thought that the on-line pages might sort of possibly look like the paper pages that I am used to.:ohmy:

Then you get to boxes where it says enter "0" as applicable - Pahhh! no it means enter 0.00 as applicable.

You are correct - that is not much help, Mr FourcyclesMcCafferty. Go and put the kettle on

I could tell you what else makes me feel distinctly unwell. Due to a mathematical error, I went into the red for a few days on my bank account last week.

I have had a letter from the bank, telling me how much interest I owe them because of that? The amount of interest - ten pence! How much did it cost them to send that letter?

That's maffs that is!

The chargeable event is not a capital gain but rather comes under income. You should have had tax deducted by the Ins Co - if so go to "other Income" -"Life Insurance Gains on which tax was treated as paid" and enter the gain and the years that the policy was held.

I'm going by the paper forms for the headings here Speicher - they might be slightly different on-line but I haven't dealt with this income on-line as yet.

ps -just checked and in the opening section, page 2 you need to confirm you have "gains from Life Ass Co's"

Yes I can, Yes I am, Yes I did...Repeat.
I have made a teensy weensy gain on a Life Assurance Policy

What type of policy?

Yes there is an option to print when you get to the end, you can also down load pdf of your tax return (which has "Copy only, Do Not send to HMRC" printed across it) for your records...

I do an online return for me and for wife. My sister said "go on line it is easy" but I managed to register my account with wifes name and hers with mine (switching the references). This seemed to jam up the system but not tell me of a problem. It took about four hours to sort out with numerous calls to daft operatives.
I am still avoiding this years- still ten days to hang on!

To make it easy  I filled in the paper form, to make sure I had all the figures needed, expecting the on-line forms to look similar, as you would. But I cannot find the Life Insurance Gains section on line.

So I tried  to fill in the Capital gains page, and got in a terrible muddle. When I go back on-line tomorrow, as you suggest, I will look for Life Assurance gains. I have the Chargeable Event Certificate and have calculated the "tax treated as paid".

Over the Hill, I would not leave it to the last minute, if I was you. You only get three goes at your log-in, then it locks you out for two hours. It does not like AOL and you might need to delete your cookies, temporary internet files, and any saved passwords on your Internet Settings.

As already mentionned, the on-line pages are not the same as the paper ones, and the boxes are very fussy about the format you fill things in.

I think I was lucky today, and got straight through to a helpful person regarding not being able to log in. But as time goes on, the telephone lines will get busier.

Have just amended my answer - give us a pm if you are still confused.

I have read your amended reply, yes it does make sense, thank you. I have deleted your original quote from my reply above.

I know from experience, that if I phone up the help desk, I need to know what the problem is, before I get a sensible answer.
