Just after a bit of advise really.
A new job starting shortly means I'm only working 3 miles from home rather than 12 so I'm thinking this gives me a perfect opportunity to start riding fixed/ss again. I've got enough parts stashed away to build up a bit of a do everything hack bike - commute, pick an 18 month old up from nursery, shopping, errands etc and have been looking at the pompino frame. It seems well respected in reviews and I know lfgss have a thread dedicated to them but I was just after real world advise from people on here.
Is it a cheap frame for a reason or will it take the abuse of everyday riding? Not bothered about particularly fast riding but how heavy are they in the real world?
Would I be better off with an older 531 or such frame or spend a bit more on something else?
I like the look of the pompino and the fact it has rack/baby seat bolts and I'm really not looking for anything flash so am thinking this could be the perfect frame
Thanks

Well, write it down boy ......
I've had my Pompino for over 5 years now and it's done sterling service as a commuter and also a couple of Audaxes. The original bottom bracket lasted 6 months, which I was ok with as they have to cut corners somewhere and the replacement is of much better quality. Of course you won't have this issue if you buy a frame only (the headset is still original on mine).
It's a great bike, not especially heavy or light and I like the way it'll take full mudguards and a rack no bother. The finish isn't bad either, mine still cleans up very well.
All in all, recommended.

I've only had my Pompino for about a month but love it. The frame is great and I'm finding it a much nicer ride than my previous bike - a Trek 7.5 with aluminium frame. The Pompino steel frame feels good and (IMHO) is quite light.
This is the bike/frame I want to hand when the zombie apocalypse/robotic uprising breaks.
The frame is currently on sale I believe. Go for it! :-)

when saying quite light - compared to what? has anyone weighed the frame? is it under 2kg? vaguely interested myself.

2.2kg, don't know if this is average or what tbh?
The more I look at them though the more I want one

yeah, it's a good frame with decent clearances for wider tyres. i'm glad to see that the bodged seatstays are gone and the current version has proper ones. relaxed seat tube angle means you can use brooks saddles without requiring super-laid-back seatpost.
I had one for a while and it was a good bike. Didn't get on with the fixed back then though. Now I'm living in the flatlands I'm on the lookout for another, or something similar.
I can't think of or find anything similar, the pompino will do everything I need it to.
I think I'm going to end up with one at some point
